COVID Question on Quora

I answered this recently.

For me the most frightening aspect is that we have never been able to make an effective vaccine against a coronavirus. Now ‘never’ does not mean impossible nor does it imply improbable but it does mean that the task ahead will be on the tough end of the biological equation.
Vaccines for both SARS and MERS (similar diseases) have had very limited results and no vaccine against any coronavirus has ever been approved by the FDA.
Our strength right now though is that in the case of COVID-19 there is a concerted effort involving teams across the globe so we may indeed strike gold, however it could take a great deal of time before that is realized. Until then we will have to rely on repurposed drugs and continued practical distancing strategies to lower the impact of this disease and control its likely spread.
