Without the right to freedom of speech and with that the notion of thought itself, we cannot truly debate and offer solutions to the problems of the day. We therefore by default entrap ourselves in a narrow paradigm that ultimately forces us to check our thinking processes. This limits necessary criticism and restricts approaches to a specific framework that services a preset solution that in all likelihood is sub-optimum and all too often downright damaging.
Speech codes are an obvious but blatant malfeasance here but cancel culture and 'right' thinking (ie. the politically correct) are mechanisms that are just as effective in ensuring conformity of thought. All pivot on the pretext of damning the transgressor to varying degrees of peer ostracization should they challenge the script.
The universities were the first to venture into the water here but government and big corporations have followed suit. As thinking people it is our duty to challenge those who advocate for a monolith of thought. Safeguarding a diversity of opinion is not just a luxury but the most reliable defense that we can mount against the totalitarian nature of groupthink. It is also our primary defense against both the folly and malicious action of the elites.
